Born in 1988, Lily grew up in Germany, the US, and Australia. She earned her B.A. in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University in 2010. After several internships in New York, she returned to Germany to study fiction directing at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, where she made multiple award-winning short films. She graduated in 2018 with her first feature film, Because We Dreamt of Flying, which she wrote, directed, and shot. The film premiered at the International Hofer Filmtage in 2019.
Whether writing, photographing, or directing, Lily uses each medium to lovingly turn our gaze toward what we’d rather not see. With tenderness and a sharp sense of humor, she breaks with expectations, coaxes the invisible to the surface, and seeks the lovable in all our absurdity, contradictions, and darkest longings.
She's fluent in English and German and can sprinkle in a little Spanish too.
Lily lives in Munich with her partner and their two children. She is currently developing several projects and teaches as a mentor for fiction directing at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
